When we set out on the path to personal growth, we don’t just have to cultivate new, healthy habits, we’ve to take apart all the old, dysfunctional patterns of behaviour.
The old structure has to be ripped apart to install the new, better one strong enough to withstand any and all vicissitudes.
The following 5 steps will involve making several conscious decisions to your existing lifestyle that will help you grow in every area of your life. These changes will give you a foundation solid enough to build a better, stronger version of yourself.
5 changes necessary for personal growth-
1. Stop playing the victim
This is always the first step towards any positive change.
You have to quit making excuses for the existing toxic habits, behaviour, and relationships. Own up to your mistakes and accept that you’re responsible (directly or indirectly) for the state of your life.
While a victim mentality allows you to evade responsibility, it also keeps you from growing into your own power. You can’t make positive, growth-oriented changes to your life with a victim mindset.
You must believe that you have the power to be whoever you want to be and the only way to do that is by accepting responsibility.
Next time something goes wrong, instead of assigning blame to something or someone else, look for what YOU could have done differently. Instead of complaining about the dysfunction in your life, tweak your own behaviour to welcome positive change.
2. Discipline Your Life
If you’re battling anxiety, depression, emotional upheaval, procrastination – discipline is what you need!
Discipline can allow you to program your mind for the life you want and without it, there is little possibility of establishing healthier habits.
Waking up at the same hour every morning increases productivity. It makes mental room for inspiration and making healthier choices even when you don’t feel like it allows you to build mental strength.
A disciplined use of social media is extremely important. The reason millennial suffer so extensively from emotional and mental issues is that of the complete invasion of social media into our lives.
So many people complain about Instagram being toxic; despite my high sensitivity and my anxiety issues, I have never found it to be anything but entertaining. I’ve no doubt it’s because I limit my use of social media and I don’t allow it more mental space than necessary.
Breaking bad habits isn’t easy. It’s behaviour that has been hardwired into our psyche so, there has to be a disciplined repetition of a healthier behaviour in its place. Whatever your goals are, they need discipline.
3. Embrace Gratitude
Gratitude is the medicine that can heal your mind, body, and spirit.
Only when you express gratitude for what you already have, do you attract abundance in every area of your life. This isn’t just some fluff from a self-help book, the benefits of gratitude are backed by science.
There are studies that conclusively prove that gratitude-
- Strengthens the moral compass encouraging the pro-social behaviour.
- Increases well-being and life satisfaction
- Activates areas of the brain responsible for processing information for decision-making purposes
- Increases patience and endurance
- Encourages compassion and reciprocity
- By increasing dopamine levels, it can keep an individual motivated for longer helping them achieve tough goals.
- Regularises sleep patterns, stress levels, and metabolism

4. Self-Awareness and Self-Acceptance
Self-awareness is the single most important element required for growth and development. Jealousy, Insecurity, aggression – all of it has its root in a definite lack of self-awareness.
Change starts by identifying what works and what doesn’t. The existing behaviour should be compared to a higher set of values and standards. This self-evaluation leads to a higher consciousness that transcends all other issues, questions, and levels of growth.
Pursue self-awareness most assiduously and as a priority over everything else.
Weed out the unhealthy and the toxic, replace it with more positive, productive behaviour, and what cannot be changed should be accepted.

5. Learn, explore, and apply!
Pain, books, and travel – the three teachers in my life.
After admitting to having a problem comes the hunt for a solution.
While I am happy to share my learning, what works for me may not work for you!
So, invest time in reading books, research papers, blogs, and explore YouTube.
Keep an open mind, and whenever you find something that resonates with you, make the effort to apply it to your life. There is some amazing stuff out there and it might really help your progress.
Also, constantly observe your own self. In moments of pain, we can learn a great deal about ourselves and as mentioned above, nothing is more important than self-awareness.
Take these 5 steps to build the life you deserve. To put it simply – no pain, no gain!
None of these changes are easy, but they are definitely essential for personal growth. Once you strengthen your own self, you’ll be able to achieve other goals – professional and personal. It will allow you to have healthier relationships. An individual pursuing growth with sincerity and dedication has a better integrity allowing him/her to help others as well. You can make a lasting change not just to your own life but to the life of your friends, family, and community members.
