‘Do what you love and you never have to work a day in your life.’
I tried to find the original source of this advice, but it has been repeated by so many people and so many times that even Google was stumped.
I have often found myself caught in the trending debate about what should guide our career decision. Do we go after our passion and live our truth (as we see it, that is!) or we go the practical route and follow whatever path is most likely to bring us social and monetary success.
I have chosen to use my passion to guide my career, but I did that only after I had acquires a Master’s degree in Economics from a top notch institute. I also worked in marketing, finance, and communications before I finally, giving into my innermost desires to write and help people, full time.
Let’s face it, passion is not always accompanied by talent which I believe has to be nurtured and developed, you’ve to put in your 10,000 hours. Passion also doesn’t guarantee success even if you’re good at what you do. Does it mean that we should choose something that we’re actually good at, or should our decision be guided by something else entirely, maybe whatever pays the best? After all, we’ve all bills to pay, and some of us have other responsibilities that make certain choices impossible.
I think, Passion, purpose, skill, practicality, all of these elements influence the career path we choose for ourselves, but which factor should be prioritised over the other – that’s what we are going to find out today with our guest, Mark Villarreal
